Hey! I’m Malcolm Mills.
I work in NYC as a director, writer, DP, actor, composer, photographer, educator, and film editor.
I used to worry these creative pursuits were different. They are not.
All thrive with improvisation, imagination, and expression, my favorite skills to practice, teach, and learn.
About my photography…
You don’t want your photographer to say they’ve never taken a photography class, but it’s true. Perhaps not exactly true- instead my education has been 18 years of observing filmmaking as an actor, and 5 years of teaching & directing multi-camera BFA acting classes with Tisch students. In 2024 I bought my own camera gear to direct an upcoming indie horror series, and it’s been a dream to work with my Sigma lenses ever since.
About my portraits…
I believe you look best with natural light and a uniquely dynamic background. Glance at the opposite - a casting director’s grid is full of bland, artificially over-lit, non-cinematic lenses with forgettably identical backdrops. Have we gotten so used to Hollywood films looking unrealistic that we want to see you that way? That said, I also love using studio lighting.
Most of my daytime work uses a Sigma 18-300mm on a Canon t8i that I love for its expressive color contrast; my night shots use a Tamron 18-50mm for its f2.8 low-light sensitivity.
I also teach filmmaking, screen acting, writing and directing at Stonestreet Studios, a residency program partnered with NYU Tisch Drama.
